Leafs Run Away With Two Points in Win v Devils
After losing back-to-back games against Washington and Pittsburgh last week, the Maple Leafs are on the road facing a tough New Jersey team coached by their old bench boss, Sheldon Keefe.
If there was ever a game this year that the Maple Leafs looked like they were completely out of, it was this one. The shot totals were 39-14, with New Jersey more than doubling the Leafs shots on net.
Toronto was absolutely dominated for 60 minutes in this hockey game. The only reason it even went to overtime was from the heroics of Anthony Stolarz, who once again put this team on his back. Stolarz was lights out this game, only allowing one goal from Ondrej Palat. Anthony Stolarz stopped 38 shots.
Shorthanded, the Leafs found themselves on an odd breakaway, with Pontus Holmberg sliding a puck through Markstrom’s pads. It is a goal that Markstrom and the Devils wish they had back, but it started the comeback of sorts for the Leafs.
The rest of the third period was more of the same, Toronto got a few chances but they were still majorly outplayed by New Jersey. Holding on, Toronto forced overtime and secured a point.
Back and forth in overtime, both teams got their looks. With a bad change from the Leafs, New Jersey had a great opportunity that they couldn’t capitalize on. Toronto went back the other way with a bounce off Stolarz that Auston Matthews was able to pick up in the neutral zone, and put it bardown past Markstrom for the overtime win.
Craig Berube spoke postgame on the Leafs 2-1 win, highlighting how they were able to find a way to walk away with two points:
“Our goalie kept us in it, so it was only 1-0. For sure, it is a big part of it.
In the third period, we started to play better and more aggressive. We controlled the play a little bit more.
In the first two periods, they had the puck. We didn’t get it from them.”
Opposing coach Sheldon Keefe spoke on his teams great effort yet only burying one goal:
“Best goaltending in the league on the other side.”
Toronto is back in action Thursday against the Anaheim Ducks.
