Kyle Manzardo’s Homer Gives Cleveland Guardians a Comeback Win

The Minnesota Twins came to Cleveland with a tall task ahead of them: win all four games.

That was the only way to get back into the race for the AL Central Division title and keep the wolves at bay in the wild-card race.

However, the Guardians rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Twins 4-3 on Monday night.

ROLLING THE DICE

Minnesota seemed to be on its way to victory, as the Twins scored three times in the third inning.

Carlos Correa scored on a passed ball by Bo Naylor, and Brandon Buxton delivered a two-run single off Matthew Boyd.

Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt made the risky decision to take Boyd out of the game. Using the bullpen in the third inning to start a four-game series could have backfired.

Instead, it was a brilliant move. Pedro Avila, Erik Sabrowski, Eli Morgan, Andrew Walters, and Emmanuel Clase shut down the Twins on three hits for the rest of the game.

COMEBACK TIME

Cleveland finally scored off Twins ace Pedro Lopez in the fifth. Andres Gimenez knocked in Brayan Rocchio with a broken-bat infield single.

Angel Martinez, who went 3-for-4, singled in the seventh to score Kyle Manzardo.

That set the stage for Manzardo to be the hero in the eighth. He launched the game-winning two-run bomb to give Cleveland the lead.

He also got a big hug from Josh Naylor at home plate.

Walters earned his first major-league win, and Clase tied Jose Mesa’s record with his 46th save.

The Guardians got more good news when Kansas City lost, so Cleveland has a five-game lead in the division.

Gavin Williams (3-9) will start tonight’s game against the Twins’ Zebby Matthews (1-3). First pitch is set for 6:40.
