Keys to the Game: How the Jaguars Tackle the Titans
For all the discussion surrounding Trevor Lawrence’s concussion on the wreckless hit by Azeez Al-Shaair, there’s still a game for the Jacksonville Jaguars to play on Sunday on the road with the Tennessee Titans. Here are the keys to whether the Duval Devout gets bragging rights or the Travis hunters celebrate a higher draft pick potential.
Return of the Mac
With Lawrance officially placed on IR due to a combination of his concussion and AC joint injuries, Mac Jones will get more playing time under center. While he had moments of shine last week against the Texans having successfully completed his first touchdown pass since 2023, one might be hopeful that Jacksonville might at least put a few points on the board.
However, the problem remains for all the woes that Tennessee has on their roster, Jeffery Simmons is still playing defensive tackle. Simmons history making Jaguars offensive coordinators sweat trying to run the ball against his presence is an oldie in Jacksonville. If this game becomes a shootout, can Jones do enough to win a shootout — or at least let kicker Cam Little to use his big leg to get some field goals?
Mayonaise Messiah
On the other hand, Will Levis is set to start for the Titans. For all the apology letters out there for the man they call the Mayonnaise Messiah, Levis does have a tendency to turn the ball over when pressured. And the best thing that the Jags boast on their rosters is the edge rush from Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker. If the two of them do their part, it seems a nearly-forgone conclusion that Levis turns the ball over.
How much Jacksonville can do with those opportunities? That could determine this game’s outcome.
Ridley’s Revenge
And here is another X-factor. With his departure from Jacksonville on the way to stop at the bank before arriving in Tennessee, Calvin Ridley received a lot of flack because of his numerous endzone drops in 2023. The concept that he absolutely goes off on the Jags for revenge is quite possible.
That being said, considering his history of dropping passes in bigtime moments in front of a home crowd . . . Maybe he is a no-show in the contest and serves the Jaguars by missing opportunities he’s likely to get with Tyson Campbell’s current injury status?
