Josh Allen Leads The Bills In A Close Opening Game Win at Home
The Bills were one of the many teams who started their opening game of the season on Sunday and they started their season played at home against the Cardinals at Highmark Stadium who were widely regarded as the underdogs in this game. However, the Cardinals came out strong and proved everyone wrong as Kyler Murray went down the field on his first drive and threw a 5-yard touchdown to Michael Wilson, then on Defence Roy Lopez tackled Josh Allen and one of the Cardinals defenders came up with the fumble and at that moment you could almost hear a pin drop as the fans were stunned. The defence did come up with a stop to force a punt but it was a rough first set of possessions for The Bills
Fast forward to the second quarter and The Bills were still trialling and had to punt to the Cardinals who went all the way up the field to Buffalo’s 29-yard line but were stopped and had to settle for a Matthew Prater field goal making it 10-0 Cardinals. Then it was the Bills turn to respond on offence as they went all the way up to the Cardinals 37-yard but were also stopped on 3rd down and had to settle for a Tyler Bass field goal, making it 10-3 Bills. So after the pair of field goals the Cardinals had the ball and they were looking scary with momentum as they led the ball back to Buffalo’s zone this time they capitalized with a James Conner 3-yard rushing touchdown making it 17-3 after the extra point with 2:40 left to play in the second quarter. However, Josh Allen and the Bills responded as they managed the play clock exceptionally until there was little time left. That is when Josh Allen rushed into the Cardinals end zone for a 7-yard rushing touchdown, making it 17-10 after the extra point. This would be the result going into the halftime as the Cardinals took a knee, to end the half.
In the 3rd quarter, the Bills were getting the ball as they kicked off to start the game and they were hoping to keep the momentum of their last score up and that is what they did as they led the ball to the Cardinals end Then Josh Allen threw an 11-yard touchdown to Mack Hollins who with the touchdown tied the game all up at 17-17. Then on defence the Bills responded again on 3rd and 7 with 5:27 to play as Gregory Rosseau forced a fumble on Kyler Murray and a Bills defender came up with the collection. With that fumble, the Bills were back on offence as they looked to capitalize again on back-to-back plays and that is what they did as they brought that ball back to the Cardinals side and with 2:37 left to play in the 3rd Josh Allen threw yet another 11-yard touchdown but this time it was to Khalil Shakir and with this touchdown it made the score 24-17 Bills.
However, in the 4th The Cardinals felt it slipping after they originally started the game with a lead so they rushed to the Bills 31 yard line but had to settle for a Matt Prater field goal making the game 24-20 Bills. However, this battle was long from over as back on offence the Bills took it to the Cardinals red zone and Josh Allen scrambled from 6 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the game, in an acrobatic play where he hurdled and jumped over the defender, looking like he hurt his hand on the play. This touchdown game Buffalo a 31-20 lead however, it would not last long as Tyler Bass kicked a 61-yard ball to Deejay Dallas who took off like a jet and ran past all the Buffalo defenders scoring the first kick return touchdown of the season and after the touchdown the Cardinals went for 2 and James Conner converted it, making the score 31-28. However, the rest of the game up to the 2-minute warning was all punts and defensive stops and at the 2 min mark Tyler Bass kicked a 39-yard field goal to make it 34-28 Buffalo, and despite last efforts from the Cardinals it wasn’t enough as the clock ran out and The Bills escaped Highmark with the opening season win, in a scary and close fashion.
Even though Josh Allen with 18/23 as he led the comeback by throwing for 232 yards with 2 passing touchdowns and he had 2 rushing touchdowns the Bills fans can’t rely on this every game as that possible injury where he had to get his hand taped up left fans worried especially when Mitch Tribusky was taking practice throws on the sideline, even though he continued to play this is an underwhelming first game for The Bills as they barely got out of Highmark with the win and if they have any hope of making the playoffs and repeating as division champs they need to avoid these close nail-biting games and there is no time like the present. As the Bills will have no time to rest as they look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Miami on Thursday Night football to play their division rivals and hopefully get a much more convincing result against a team that can prove to be a real division and playoff contender.
