Joe Mixon’s Ankle Injury Not A Long Term Issue

The Houston Texans got some positive injury news this week after improving to 2-0 with a 19-13 win over the Bears on Sunday Night Football.

Prized free agent acquisition, Joe Mixon was injured in the second half after a tackler appeared to roll over his ankle.

Mixon returned to the game but would only play seven more snaps, only one of those being a rush attempt.

Both Mixon and Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans were adamant that the tackle was a hip drop tackle which the NFL placed an emphasis on banning this past offseason.

“Definitely in my mind, is considered the hip-drop,” Ryans said. “”When the defender unweights himself and then he puts all of his weight on the runner’s legs, you see why they want to get the hip-drop tackle out of the game.

Joe Mixon took to X to express his displeasure with the tackle saying “The NFL and NFLPA made it a rule and an emphasis for a reason. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

11 minutes later in another post, Mixon said “When I got up I asked the ref where is the flag that was a hip tackle. & his reply was no it wasn’t.

The Texans have reportedly sent over film of the play for the NFL to review but unfortunately, that doesn’t help Mixon’s ankle.

However, it appears that Houston may have dodged a bullet with their new star running back.

Following an MRI on Monday, league sources have confirmed that Mixon’s injury does not appear to be a long-term issue.

DeMeco Ryans did not comment on Mixon’s status for Sunday’s game against the Vikings. However, there is no doubt the Texans will want to be cautious with their star running back’s ankle.

In the event that Mixon is not able to go on Sunday, the Texans will turn to Dameon Pierce if he is able to play after a hamstring kept him out in Week Two.

Cam Akers who got a bulk of the carries when Mixon left is expected to also get work when the Texans look to improve to 3-0 on the road in Minnesota.
