Is this what Stefanski coaching for his job looks like? Part 12
“Mike Vrabel” is one of the hottest names on the head coaching market for the upcoming hiring phase of the NFL calendar. Is Cleveland the best fit? Or would he be better suited to sow oats in someone else’s field?
Chicago Bears leadership has been nearly as questionable as the Browns’ in recent years. What they may have figured out is the quarterback position, which Cleveland decidedly does not, though many in the pro scouting community and media aren’t at all sold on Caleb Williams based on what he’s shown this season despite being drafted No. 1 overall in April.
The New York Jets might be one of the few franchises with as much disquiet and chaos in its facility’s upper floors as the Browns deal with regularly. Neither can get out of their own way and neither has a conspicuous path to consistent success.
The Saints gig is always viewed with suspicion from the outside because of the years of salary cap sleight of hand Mickey Loomis has been able to pull off under the table cloth. But at least they have organizational stability, continuity in the front office and an owner who stays out of the way.
It’s expected that Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson will be out with the final game’s dirty uniforms in Jacksonville. They’ve recently given their signal-caller Trevor Lawrence a hefty contract extension. And if a prospective coach were to agree that he’s the way forward, that job could be enticing.
The Raiders and Giants are also roiling in the stew of conjecture that supposes they could be looking for new leaders on the sideline. And neither of those would be considered fantastic landing spots if recent history is to be taken into account.
So there will be opportunities for Vrabel without question. How heavily staying near his hometown (which would clearly be the primary selling point) would factor into his decision is a fascinating debate.
But the bottom line appears to be that Browns upper management will retain Kevin Stefanski as the head coach in Cleveland — even if he doesn’t win any more games this season and mismanages the clock in all of them.
