Is Mike McCarthy A Good Choice For The Chicago Bears?
Halas Hall (and the computers located at Halas Hall) have been HUMMING over the past number of days. After the season concluded for the Chicago Bears last week, Ryan Poles and co. have been getting down to business when it comes to their search for a new Head Coach. They have been interviewing (what seems like) everyone under the sun, to the point where I wouldn’t be surprised if I receive a call from the ‘higher ups’ regarding the position.
It has been a WILD start to the off-season, with names like Ben Johnson, Kliff Kingsbury, and Mike Vrabel (now with the Pats) leading Chicago’s ‘hot list.’ But NOW, after a tumultuous situation in Dallas, it looks like the McCaskey’s merry band of misfits have found yet ANOTHER POSSIBLE SUITOR for the open role.
Per Tom Pelissero, The Bears will meet with Mike McCarthy on Wednesday, 1/15.

That is right, Bears fans; Mike McCarthy. Mike McCarthy; the former head-human of the Green Bay Packers will reportedly be interviewing for the Bears’ HC position on Wednesday (1/15). This will make the 10th interview for the ‘Bears’ Brass’ since the beginning of the season, and it will continue this anxiety-inducing road that Bears fans have been on ever since Matt Eberflus was fired.
McCarthy, for those of you who are unaware, has been a Head Coach in the National Football League for the past 18 seasons. In his almost two decades in the league, the former Packer has compiled a resumé that includes;
- Record: 174-112-2 (.608)
- Playoff Record: 11-11
- Super Bowls: 1
He is, if we’re being blunt…..a good coach. He’s a good coach! The man has made 12 playoffs appearances in his 18-year career, and has a Super Bowl to show for it. When his team’s are good, they are some of the best in the league. Just look at his years with the Packers and the Cowboys, where his offense ranked near the top of the league on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS.
The man has had a history of elevating the play of his quarterbacks, with the likes of Steve Bono, Aaron Rodgers, and Dak Prescott benefiting from his tutelage. But the question is……could he do the same thing for Caleb Williams? And would the Bears’ Brass pull the trigger on the idea?
Personally….I think he would be a great fit for this young Bears’ roster. A man like McCarthy, with everything he’s been through over the years, could be just what Caleb needs to take him to the next level. Sure……he did all that he could last year, with the lack-luster resources that he had around him. But to give him a veteran coach with a Super Bowl under his belt? That could be an absolute GAME CHANGER!
The only problem that I have though……is his age. If Pete Carroll ends up not coming back to coaching, McCarthy would end up becoming the 4th oldest head coach in the league at 61-years old. He’s BEEN AROUND, and as someone who was hoping to have a Head Coach/Quarterback combo for years to come…..I’m not really sure how many “years” Mike has left coaching?
I mean sure, if we are in a “win now” type of mode (which we normally are), then Mike McCarthy is the play here. If we give this man the keys to this organization, I feel like he has a real chance to get us back to the playoffs in a short amount of time. BUT, if we want more ‘longevity’ to the position…..then I think we need to stick with Ben Johnson. I think we need to stick with the man who has the BEST offense in the league right now, and someone who turned Jared Goff into an MVP-caliber threat.
Now, could that blow up in our face? Absolutely! Ben Johnson could be another one of those humans who’s a great coordinator, but a bad head coach. He could be one of those individuals who looked great on paper, but couldn’t translate his talents to a much larger scale. And if that’s the case……then the Bears are back to square 1, and have wasted YET ANOTHER talented roster on a ‘hunch.’
Simply put; there are only two plays here, but it’s all a crap-shoot to say the least. But as always….what do I know? I’m just a guy from the Midwest, with a beer and a laptop, trying to make sense of this world.
