Is Brian Daboll or Mike McCarthy on a Hotter Seat?
The Dallas Cowboys picked up a 20-15 victory over the New York Giants to begin Week 4 on Thursday night.
The Giants fell to 1-3 while the Cowboys are now even at 2-2 after an unimpressive victory. A win is a win, especially on the road, but it does not save head coach Mike McCarthy from the hot seat. The same can be said for Brian Daboll, who made questionable decisions that helped aid in a loss.
So, the question is, who is on the hotter seat this season?
Why it’s Brian Daboll
Both head coaches came into the season with the trust of the front office. The difference with the Giants is that if Daboll goes, it is likely that General Manager Joe Schoen is also on his way out.
There were negative feelings when Saquon Barkley left for Philadelphia in free agency. Owner John Mara was unhappy with the turn of events and the run game has struggled because of it. That is already a check against this regime.
Move onto the field and the Giants are 1-3. On Thursday night, it seemed as though Daboll coached to not get blown out. Early in the second half, the Giants faced a fourth-and-goal from the three-yard line and Daboll opted to kick a field goal rather than try to get in the end zone for the first time at home this season.
The other knock against Daboll is that the Giants are likely going to be the worse team. If Dallas all of a sudden goes into a free fall, which could have happened with a loss on Thursday night, that might change but there are not many wins on the schedule for a bad Giants team.
Right now, the team is struggling but the head coach is not elevating it.
Why it’s Mike McCarthy
There are different ways for a head coach to get fired and in Dallas, that its not producing. That might not have been the case for Jason Garrett, who was given a decade to attempt to win anything, but McCarthy was brought in to right the ship. So far, it has been more of the same in Dallas.
The Cowboys looked the part in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns but that win looks less and less impressive the more the Browns play. After two home losses, the Cowboys needed a win against a team that Dan Prescott has dominated. Dallas kept the Giants around all night but earned the win.
McCarthy’s seat became scalding hot after being blown out by the Green Bay Packers in the postseason last year in Dallas. There are high expectations this season and if the Cowboys do not reach them, Jerry Jones could be looking for a new head coach.
