Inside The History Of The Dallas Wings Head Coaching Carousel

Back in 2016, the then Tulsa Shock packed their bags and moved south into DFW to relocate and become the Dallas Wings.

Now heading for their 10th season in the metroplex, the Wings will be searching for their fifth head coach.

Wings CEO Greg Bibb announced on Friday that the team would be parting ways with Head Coach Latricia Trammell after two seasons.

In a statement released on X, Trammell said “It has been an absolute honor to work with such talented players, staff, and to be supported by the most passionate fans.

Trammell’s firing will now leave the Wings looking for their 4th head coach since the 2020 bubble season.

The head coaching position has been much of a revolving door for the Wings since the team moved to Dallas in 2016.

Let’s break down the many names that have seen themselves be the head coaches of the Dallas Wings.

Fred Williams moved with the team from Tulsa to Dallas after he was appointed in 2014 by the Shock.

Williams spent two full seasons with the Wings before being let go in the middle of the 2018 season.

Under interim head coach Taj McWilliams-Franklin the Wings made it to the playoffs for the first time in team history before eventually losing in the first round.

In those parts of three seasons, Williams went 42-58 while failing to reach the postseason as the Wings’ first head coach.

Looking to make his first head-coaching hire in DFW, Greg Bibb chose Bryan Agler who had just parted ways with the LA Sparks where he won the 2016 WNBA Finals.

Unfortunately for the Wings Agler wouldn’t find the same success that he did in LA as he finished 18-38 in two seasons at the helm.

In the 2020 bubble season, the Wings finished barely outside of the postseason after missing out on the final seed on the last day of the season.

Moving outside the bubble, Dallas hired Vickie Johnson as they looked to turn the corner with their young franchise that was so close to the playoffs the year before.
Johnson made the playoffs in each of her two seasons with the Wings but would lose in the first round in both 2021 and 2022.

Still, Johnson finished with a 40-36 record and became the first head coach in Wings team history to have a winning record in their tenure.

Needing to turn the page and find playoff success, the Wings hired Latricia Trammell to lead a new way forward.

In 2023, that is exactly what she did as Trammell led the Wings to a 22-18 record and their first playoff series win in team history with a first-round sweep over the Atlanta Dream.

However, 2024 saw the Wings take a step back as an injury-riddled team finished at just 9-31, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020 which led to Trammell’s firing.

Looking forward to 2025, Dallas will now look for their next head coach after the last three have survived just two seasons.

With free agency and the WNBA draft on the horizon, the Wings will hopefully sooner rather than later find the next person who will be tasked with leading the franchise to places they have never been before.
