Inside The Dallas Wings Franchise Altering Day
New Dallas Wings GM Curt Miller was supposed to be in DFW to watch Sundayâs WNBA Draft Lottery.
Millerâs early morning flight from LAX to DFW was canceled leaving him to watch the lottery from the office of one of his longtime assistant coaches.
âWe talked about if this was the only bad thing that happened today it would be a great day,â Miller said when meeting with the media from the city of angels.
Forutauntuly for the Dallas Wings, Millerâs flight was just about the only thing that went wrong on WNBA Draft Lottery Sunday.
For the first time since moving to DFW in 2016, the Dallas Wings won the draft lottery securing the number one overall pick in the 2025 draft.
âWhat an exciting day for the Dallas Wings,â Miller said during his opening statement. âObviously super excited for the entire franchise from ownership to Greg Bibb whoâs done so much for the organization and especially for our fanbase and I canât wait for after the availability to start talking to our players.
However, there was one player to whom Miller didnât wait until after he finished talking with the media to respond.
âSince the pick was announced, Iâve answered one text message and it was Arike [Ogunbowale] and just canât be happier to see her excitement and see how much she amongst all our players have given to the organizationâ.
Ogunbowale took to X to share her excitement. âI just fell to my knees. THANK YOU, LORD!â the four-time WNBA All-Star said.
Another Dallas Wings player quoted that tweet simply using the shaking hands emoji and it was draft lottery representative Maddy Siegrist.
Just earlier, Siegrist tweeted âThat was so nerve-rackingâ after being on hand in ESPNâs Bristol Connecticut studio.
Siegrist will forever be known as the representative who watched the Wings win the draft lottery for the first time in team history.
Dallas had the number one overall pick in 2021 but acquired it via trade before they selected Texas center Charli Collier who is no longer in the WNBA.
This go around, the choice should be much more clear as the Wings are widely projected to select Uconn point guard Paige Bueckers.
However, Miller and the Wings will have around five months to find the right fit to change the trajectory of the franchise.
Miller obviously did not comment on specific players as he almost certainly wonât until the night of the draft but to say he doesnât know the kind of player that he wants would be foolish.
âYouâre gonna hear it over and over again, a culture player, players that play unselfishly, players that think about it being bigger than themselvesâ.
