Inside The Dallas Wings Franchise Altering Day
New Dallas Wings GM Curt Miller was supposed to be in DFW to watch Sunday’s WNBA Draft Lottery.
Miller’s early morning flight from LAX to DFW was canceled leaving him to watch the lottery from the office of one of his longtime assistant coaches.
“We talked about if this was the only bad thing that happened today it would be a great day,” Miller said when meeting with the media from the city of angels.
Forutauntuly for the Dallas Wings, Miller’s flight was just about the only thing that went wrong on WNBA Draft Lottery Sunday.
For the first time since moving to DFW in 2016, the Dallas Wings won the draft lottery securing the number one overall pick in the 2025 draft.
“What an exciting day for the Dallas Wings,” Miller said during his opening statement. “Obviously super excited for the entire franchise from ownership to Greg Bibb who’s done so much for the organization and especially for our fanbase and I can’t wait for after the availability to start talking to our players.
However, there was one player to whom Miller didn’t wait until after he finished talking with the media to respond.
“Since the pick was announced, I’ve answered one text message and it was Arike [Ogunbowale] and just can’t be happier to see her excitement and see how much she amongst all our players have given to the organization”.
Ogunbowale took to X to share her excitement. “I just fell to my knees. THANK YOU, LORD!” the four-time WNBA All-Star said.
Another Dallas Wings player quoted that tweet simply using the shaking hands emoji and it was draft lottery representative Maddy Siegrist.
Just earlier, Siegrist tweeted “That was so nerve-racking” after being on hand in ESPN’s Bristol Connecticut studio.
Siegrist will forever be known as the representative who watched the Wings win the draft lottery for the first time in team history.
Dallas had the number one overall pick in 2021 but acquired it via trade before they selected Texas center Charli Collier who is no longer in the WNBA.
This go around, the choice should be much more clear as the Wings are widely projected to select Uconn point guard Paige Bueckers.
However, Miller and the Wings will have around five months to find the right fit to change the trajectory of the franchise.
Miller obviously did not comment on specific players as he almost certainly won’t until the night of the draft but to say he doesn’t know the kind of player that he wants would be foolish.
“You’re gonna hear it over and over again, a culture player, players that play unselfishly, players that think about it being bigger than themselves”.
