How Sebastian Walcott Has Rose From The Bahamas To One Of Baseball’s Top Prospects
The Bahamas isn’t exactly an island known for being a Baseball hotbed.
It wasn’t until Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke onto the scene a few years ago that people began to recognize the island could produce high-level MLB talent.
However, the entire landscape of baseball in the Bahamas could be changing soon with an 18-year-old at the forefront.
During the 2023 international signing period, the Rangers had just $4.144 million to work with when scouting amateur talent.
$3.2 million was spent on Bahamian shortstop Sebastian Walcott, and the early returns are proving to be worth every penny.
With taller shortstops becoming more prevalent in the MLB, the Rangers were attracted to Walcott’s 6’3 frame.
Despite the big frame, Walcott has stolen 39 bases in 169 games across four minor league levels.
After playing in the lower minor league levels during his first year in the organization, Walcott turned heads after breaking through with AA Frisco in 2024.
Walcott slashed .348/.375/.609 in a very short stint with AA Frisco which included being the team’s shortstop during their playoff run.
Even though he played so few games at AA, baseball prospect writers have taken notice of what Walcott is.
The Athletics Keith Law ranked Walcott as the number two prospect in all of baseball and just about every other publication had him in the top 60.
2025, will be a big year for Walcott as he secured an invite to MLB Spring Training where he will turn 19 years old.
Walcott will be able to get more time at the higher levels in the minor leagues under his belt in a year which will be key for his development.
If Walcott doesn’t graduate prospect status and continues to perform at the level that he has, the Rangers could very well have the number one prospect in all of baseball on their hands by the end of the season.
