How NFL Rookie Quarterbacks Performed In Week 1

The 2024 NFL season began on Sunday with Week 1 action.

All eyes were on rookie quarterbacks taken early in the 2024 NFL Draft. There were five quarterbacks taken in the first round with three being named starters for Week 1. The New England Patriots opted for Jacoby Brissett over rookie Drake Maye while the Atlanta Falcons signed Kirk Cousins to a lucrative contract before selecting Michael Penix Jr.

Of the three rookies who did take the field, there were some big plays sprinkled in with many struggles. Below, take a look at how they fared in Week 1.

Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders

Stats: 17-for-24, 184 yards, 0 TDs/INTs, 88 rushing yards, 2 TDs

Jayden Daniels entered Washington with high expectations, despite the overall outlook for the team. He did not disappoint in Week 1. The Commanders fell on the road to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 37-20, but the rookie quarterback showed great promise.

Washington did not put weapons around Daniels in his first season. A lackluster wide receiving core struggled to get open but Daniels was able to use his legs effectively when the play broke down. He rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns, which came inside the five-yard line. Daniels took care of the ball and made the easy throws that were necessary.

The big miss came coming out of haltime with Washington trailing 16-7. Terry McLaurin got loose down the sideline for what would have been a touchdown but Daniels slightly overthrew his No. 1 receiver. Despite one overthrow, Daniels performed well and Washington believes it has its quarterback for years to come.

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

Stats: 26-for-42, 138 yards, 0TDs, 2 INTs, 35 rushing yards, 1 TD

The Broncos knew that this was going to be a process. Sean Payton believes he drafted the right quarterback in Bo Nix but it was not a successful debut. The Broncos struggled to move the ball against the Seattle Seahawks and Nix finished with just 138 passing yards.

It was a lot of short passes for Nix as he completed 26 passes to get to 138 yards. There is a lack of weapons in Denver, outside of Courtland Sutton, and this does not give Nix much to work with. He looked elusive at times, including a rushing touchdown in the second half.

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

Stats: 14-for-29, 93 yards, 0 TDs/INTs, 15 rushing yards

Caleb Williams was taken first overall in the draft and the Chicago Bears were the darlings of the offseason. Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze joined DJ Moore in the receiving room and the offense was expected to be dynamic. It still might be but it was not in Week 1 against a poor Tennessee Titans team.

The Bears struggled to get first downs, let alone put the ball in the end zone. The game was won thanks to a blocked punt and pick six in the fourth quarter. As for Williams, he did not eclipse 100 passing yards and was escaping for his life from the early moments. The elite group of wide receivers did not get open and the numbers were ugly early on for Williams.

Is this going to be the norm in Chicago? Chances are no. The team is talented and it is hard to overreact to Week 1. With that being said, Williams will need to improve and improve fast.
