Former Star Wings Guard Signs With LA Sparks As Dallas PG Concerns Continue

When the WNBA returned from its one-month Olympic Break last week, the Dallas Wings gained some key players back from injury as they look to make a last-minute playoff push.

Satou Sabally and Jaelyn Brown rejoined the team for Friday night’s 109-91 loss to the Connecticut Sun meaning it was the end of the road for the Wings’ two hardship contract players Odyssey Sims and Monique Billings.

After averaging 17.2 points and 5.6 assists with the Wings Odyssey Sims hit the open market after Dallas couldn’t make a trade to fill up a roster spot to bring her back.

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Sparks announced that they had signed Sims to a seven-day hardship contract.

Sims will return to LA where she played two seasons in 2017 and 2018, averaging 8.9 points per game.

In her first two games with the Sparks, Sims has scored just 5 total points as LA dropped contests to the Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces.

For the Dallas Wings, their struggles continue especially at the point guard where starter Sevgi Uzun averages just 5.3 points and 3.5 assists.

Uzun made the team out of training camp after both Crystal Dangerfield and Veronica Burton were traded and cut respectively.

Rookie Jacy Sheldon continues to show promise but is still developing as a talent in this league. Sheldon has scored double-digit points in five of her last twelve games.

Safe to say that the Wings could use a point guard like Sims in their starting lineup right now as the team sits at just 6-20 on the season.

With Sims being released from her hardship with the Sparks in a matter of days, there could be an avenue for a reunion for her to return to the Wings.

Dallas would need to make some sort of trade to free up a roster spot to bring Sims in.

Two likely candidates to clear a roster spot could be Lou Lopez-Senechal or Stephanie Soares who both have not been huge factors in the Wings’ rotation this season.

If Sims were to return to the Wings, her averaging 17.2 points per game seems unlikely with Satou Sabally’s return but there is no doubt that Dallas could use someone like her to anchor down the point guard position.
