Former Rangers All Star Joey Gallo Once Again Hits Free Agency
Former Texas Rangers All-Star Joey Gallo is set to hit free agency once again to possibly join his sixth team in five years.
The Washington Nationals announced Sunday that they would decline Gallo’s $8 million mutual option.
In just 76 games with Washington, Gallo hit .161 with 10 home runs and 27 RBI while splitting time in the outfield and at first base.
2024 was just a snapshot of a wider image of Gallo’s immense struggles since he left Texas at the 2021 trade deadline.
Since leaving the Rangers, Gallo has been a member of the Yankees, Dodgers, Twins, and now the Nationals.
Each team Gallo has played for has seen him hit below .200 and hit less than 25 home runs in each season.
With the Rangers, Gallo found success becoming an All-Star in both 2019 and 2021 while hitting 41 and 40 home runs in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Gallo started his career at third base when he was called up in 2015 but would eventually move to the outfield.
That move proved to be successful as Gallo won Gold Gloves in both 2019 with Texas and 2021 when he spent time with the Rangers and Yankees.
As we sit here in 2024, the Rangers are widely considered to be the winners of the Joey Gallo trade which saw Texas bring in Josh Smith, Ezequiel Duran, Glenn Otto, and Trevor Hauver.
Without that trade, the Texas Rangers likely would not have won the 2023 World Series as Ezequiel Duran played a huge role in stepping up at various times when Corey Seager was injured.
A potential reunion with Gallo could potentially make some sense as Texas would be able to bring in a really cheap bat which they need.
However, if you were to pick the Rangers or the field as far as signing Gallo, you go with the field every single time.
