Former MVP Derrick Rose To Retire

The youngest-ever NBA MVP has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball.

Derrick Rose announced early Thursday morning that he will hang up his sneakers after 16 seasons in the NBA.

“Knowing that I gave my all to the game, I feel confident in my decision,” Rose told ESPN this week.

“Basketball was just the beginning for me. Now, it’s important that I give my all to my family — they deserve that.”

Rose’s career will be defined by his 2010-2011 season in which he averaged 25 points and 7 assists en route to winning the MVP award.

Just two seasons prior, Rose won the Rookie of the Year award following averages of 16.8 points and 6.3 assists.

During the 2011-2012 season, Rose suffered a career-altering ACL tear in the playoffs in a game where Chicago was leading by 12 points with just one minute left.

Still to this day, the basketball world debates where Derrick Rose would be if he was subbed out of that game and the injury never occurred.

Following his injury, Rose never reached the same status he once had, causing him to leave Chicago after three more seasons in which he averaged a solid 16.9 points.

After joining the Knicks, Rose would put up a solid 18 points in his first year outside the Windy City but struggled in the following season which he started in Clevland before being traded to Minnesota.

The next season, Rose would seemingly revive his career averaging 18 points per game and finishing in the top ten of both most improved player and 6th man of the year.

Rose would follow that with solid seasons in Detroit and New York before eventually ending in Memphis.

Carrer-wise, Rose will finish his 16 years in the NBA averaging 17.4 points 3.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per contest.

Memphis had Rose under contract for the 2024-2025 season but following his request for a release, the Grizzles will get back the full $3.3 million he is owed.
