Florida State Falls To Boston College: What’s Wrong With The Seminoles During 0-2 Start?
Florida State entered the season as the favorite in the ACC with hopes of making a run at a National Championship.
After being left out of the CFB Playoff last season following the season-ending injury to quarterback Jordan Travis, many believed that the Seminoles would enter the season with a fire and desire to be great. Well, as we sit here entering Week 2, Florida State has been punched in the mouth.
The Seminoles fell to 0-2 following Monday night’s loss to Boston College in Tallahassee. The playoff hopes for Florida State have dwindled down to all but nothing unless there is a major run coming. With the play on both sides of the ball, it is hard to see that coming.
So, the question remains, what’s wrong with the Seminoles early on?
There has been plenty of talk surrounding DJ Uiagalelei, and we will get there as well, but the defense has not done its job to begin the season. And neither has Mike Norvell and this is something the head coach said in his postgame press conference on Monday night.
“I apologize to our fans, I apologize to everybody associated with the program. That was extremely disappointing that we’re not better,” Norvell said.
Defensively, the Seminoles have shown an inability to stop the run and this has led to long, extended drives from opponents. Against Georgia Tech in Week 0, Florida State allowed three drives of 10 or more plays and three of 75 or more yards. This includes a first-half drive of 14 plays, 75 yards that gave Georgia Tech the lead.
The trend continued against Boston College. The Eagles put together two long drives in the first half that gave them a 14-0 lead. This proved to be more than enough against a poor offensive attack from Uiagalelei and the Seminoles.
Florida State did not get a first down until midway through the second quarter on Monday night. The first three drives resulted in a three-and-out as ball control completely flipped toward Boston College. There was no semblnace of a rushing attack and the quarterback could not complete passes.
Uiagalelei continued to show an inability to make a play. He was rushed under pressure and looked for his checkdown early and often. This goes with missing wide open receivers all night, including in the corner of the end zone in the first half that would have put Florida State right back in the game.
With two early-season losses, it is hard to imagine Florida State turning it around enough to get into the playoff. The transfer portal has been good for Novell and the Seminoles but it has gotten off to an ugly start this season.
