Flashback – Rangers Clinch 2016 Division in Oakland

The Texas Rangers’ final road trip of the 2024 season will be part of history despite the team’s 74-82 record.

When the Rangers square off against the A’s from the Oakland Coliseum on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, it will be the final series played before Oakland relocates.

Next season, the A’s will play their home games at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento before they officially move to Vegas.

With the end of an era, let’s look back at one of the Rangers’ most iconic moments in the Bay Area.

On September 23rd, 2016, the Rangers took down the A’s 3-0 to take home their 7th AL West division title.

Entering the first of three in Oakland, the Rangers’ magic number was just one need to take down the A’s to win the division.

Ace Cole Hamels took the mound and did not disappoint throwing seven scoreless innings and earning his 15th win of the season.

“It’s fun,” Hamels said. “You know what’s at stake and it’s always great to be part of it, especially to be out on the mound doing your part.

Run support wasn’t exactly something that Hamels got a ton of on that night as the game was held scoreless until the seventh inning.

Carlos Gomez and Ian Desmond led off the inning with singles setting the stage for Carlos Beltran to bring home the first run of the game via an RBI groundout.

First ballot hall of famer Adrian Beltre was the very next batter, and he would smack a two-run home run down the left field line to give Texas the 3-0 lead they would eventually win by.

Matt Bush would throw a scoreless 8th giving way for Sam Dyson to earn his 36th of 37 saves he would collect that season.

Every Ranger fan knows how the 2016 season ended… and it wasn’t pretty but they will always have that division title they won at the Coliseum.
