White Sox Minor League Player of the Week (July 19-28): Bryan Ramos

Minor league action has resumed after the All-Star break, and it was a pretty average time period for the farm. The DSL White Sox led the way during this time frame, finishing 6-3, while the Barons got back to their winning ways with a 5-4 spurt. Interestingly, not much went right for the Barons offense, which only averaged 2.4 runs per game — but the pitching staff bailed out the hitters.

The Knights broke even, winning four of their eight games since the last update. Many of the highlights came from Bryan Ramos, who posted a sky-high OBP to edge out Dominic Fletcher for the weekly honor.

Ramos, 22, played his first 15 major league games earlier this season before being sent back down to Charlotte. Ramos is clearly hungry to make it back to the highest level, as he has earned his second straight award as a major catalyst for the Knights offense. Especially given how much is going wrong at the MLB level, Ramos has probably already shown that he deserves another chance before the end of the season.

The Barons had an interesting week, going 5-4 despite their offense falling asleep for the majority of the time frame. However, the pitching staff was on top of its game, and that effort was led by Jairo Iriarte, who could have hardly been better during his only start of the week.

Iriarte, one of the top White Sox pitching prospects, struck out five and did not allow any hits during his four innings of work. Iriarte’s walk rate has been a bit high with the Barons this year (4.05 BB/9 in 91 innings), and his outing this week did not help that figure. However, when he has put the ball in the zone, Double-A hitters have had a very tough time making sharp contact. This is Iriarte’s first weekly honor of the season, and it felt like he was knocking on the door for one of these for quite some time.

Shane Murphy 5 IP, 4 ER, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K

It was an eventful stretch for the Dash, who shut down the Tourists (41-52) before struggling against the Hot Rods (55-40). Starter Tommy Vail was terrific during his start, building on his strong stint with the Dash. Vail, 25, opened the season with Kannapolis, but in his first three starts with the Dash the southpaw has pitched 15 innings and only allowed one earned run on seven hits, striking out 20. Winston-Salem pitchers did not have many answers for Bowling Green hitters, but that was not the case for Vail, who takes his second weekly honor of the year and his first with the Dash.

Ricardo Brizuela 5 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 K

The Cannon Ballers started off strong against Augusta, outscoring them 26-4 in a three-game sweep. However, they only took one of five against Charleston to finish .500 during the time frame. Right fielder Drake Logan is not known for his power, but he launched a homer and two doubles during his big week.

Arxy Hernández and Albertson Asigen were also in contention due to their strong numbers at the plate, and Ricardo Brizuela had a great start, too.
