Edmonton Oilers Make Leon Draisaitl Highest Paid NHL Player With 8 Year $112 Million Extension

The NHL has a new highest-paid player this morning after the Edmonton Oilers Leon Draisaitl agreed to an 8-year $112 million contract extension.

Draisaitl is set to make 14 million per year to stay in Edmonton after helping them reach the Stanley Cup Final last season.

Last season, Draisaitl reached the 100+ point mark for the fifth time in his career after registering 106 points scoring 41 goals, and assisting on 65.

“This is an historic day for the Edmonton Oilers,” said Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Stan Bowman. “Leon’s commitment to our team, our city and Oilers fans everywhere cannot be overstated. His desire to help bring a Stanley Cup title home to Edmonton is central to everything he does both on and off the ice.”

In 10 seasons with the Oilers, Draisaitl has recorded 850 points including 110 in 2019/2020 which was enough to win the Art Ross Trophy that season.

Back in 2014, the Oilers made Draisaitl the number three overall pick in the draft and he has been climbing the ranks in Edmonton franchise history ever since.

2023-2024 saw Edmonton reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in the Draisaitl/McDavid era.

Free agency saw the Oilers bring in forwards Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson in an attempt to shoe up their roster to make another run to attempt to win their first Stanley Cup since 1993.
