Eagles vs Saints: Eagles Keys to Victory

Week 3 is here, and Eagles fans are feeling just about as low as they can. Coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Falcons on Monday night, it’s almost clear what the Eagles need to do to win—but let’s break it down anyway. Here are 3 keys to victory against the Saints.

1. Get Pressure on Derek Carr

Historically, Carr has struggled against pressure, but that hasn’t been the case so far this season. He’s completed 30 of 39 passes for 443 yards, 5 TDs, and 1 INT. He’s making it look easy, leading a high-powered Saints offense that’s averaging 45.5 points per game. If they keep that up, they could be on their way to the Super Bowl. But in all honesty, it’s unlikely those numbers stay that high as the season progresses. The NFL is unpredictable, and things could come crashing down at any moment. Could this be the week?

If the Eagles’ pass rush can win some matchups, maybe. So far, Josh Sweat and Bryce Huff have been underwhelming, and the interior line hasn’t been much better. Someone has to step up and get this unit going, or Carr will have all day in the pocket. If that happens, it’s going to be a long game for the Eagles.

2. Stop the Run: Alvin Kamara

Alvin Kamara has been the Saints’ X-factor so far, rushing 35 times for 198 yards and 4 TDs. After watching the Falcons and Bijan Robinson steamroll this Eagles’ run defense, the big question is: how will they respond?

All week, analysts I trust who’ve broken down the all-22 footage have pointed to the same thing—it’s more about technique and scheme than the players themselves. After watching some of the tape myself, I agree. But I’m not saying everything will improve just with better schemes—there were plenty of missed tackles last week, and that’s on the players. The Falcons used cut blocks to take the linebackers out of plays, and their run scheme allowed them to climb to the second level with ease.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio can’t let that happen again. He needs to throw in five-man fronts, run blitzes—anything to mix it up. Running the same scheme as last week will just invite more of the same result.

3. Get Dallas Goedert Involved

I thought Dallas Goedert was going to shine last week, especially with A.J. Brown out. Today, Brown is out again, and I’m hoping this time my prediction holds true. Goedert was too quiet on Monday, catching just 3 passes for 38 yards. He’s far too talented to put up numbers like that.

Goedert is easily a top 5 tight end in this league talent-wise, but the numbers haven’t reflected that. That has to change this week. If the Eagles can get him involved, it will open up the rest of the offense and take pressure off DeVonta Smith and the passing attack as a whole.
