Eagles vs. Falcons: Observations from a Frustrating Loss
1. The Pass Rush Was Non-Existent
Starting with the negatives, the pass rush was disappointing. Josh Sweat and Bryce Huff, our two highest-paid EDGE rushers, combined for only one QB hit. Jalen Carter, our star defensive tackle, was double-teamed for most of the night, but when he wasn’t, he created some pressure. Milton Williams was the only Eagle to record a sack, and that’s simply not good enough. This team has too many talented pieces to be underperforming at this level, and it’s unclear how Howie Roseman can address this issue in-season, but something needs to change.
2. The Run Defense Was Terrible
The defense overall had a rough night, especially in run defense. Bijan Robinson averaged 6.9 yards per carry, while Tyler Allgeier averaged 5.9 yards per carry. The Falcons’ offensive line dominated the Eagles’ defensive front in both pass protection and run blocking. Eagles’ EDGE rushers often lost contain, trying to be too aggressive with inside lanes, while the defensive tackles were pushed around. The linebackers and secondary also contributed with missed tackles, which only made things worse.
3. Nick Sirianni’s Decision to Kick the Field Goal Was Questionable
I don’t mind the decision to pass the ball to Saquon Barkley on 3rd-and-3 — it was the right call, and if Saquon had made the catch, the game would’ve been over. The problem was Sirianni’s decision to kick the field goal afterward. Going up 6 points isn’t much better than being up 3. Either way, the Falcons would need a touchdown to win. If the Eagles had gone for it on 4th down and failed, the Falcons would still need a field goal just to tie. I wish Sirianni had been more aggressive, as that mindset will be necessary to win close games this season.
4. Jalen Hurts Played Great
Despite the loss, I believe Hurts played a fantastic game, minus the interception. He showed flashes of the 2022 version of himself, and that’s what the Eagles need if they’re going to contend this year. As a runner, he was effective with 13 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown. His extra effort and fight for yards were evident, and it feels like this could be a turning point for him. I have a hunch we’re getting MVP-level Jalen Hurts back this season.
5. Saquon Continues to Impress
Saquon Barkley had a strong game, rushing 22 times for 95 hard-fought yards. He and Hurts kept the offense moving when things started to slow down. Unfortunately, most people will focus on his drop late in the game, but that shouldn’t overshadow the fact that he looked sharp and continues to be a key part of this offense.
6. Other Shout-Outs
Thomas Booker looked like he belongs in the NFL, and that’s exciting to see. Quinyon Mitchell almost had a spectacular interception, and I’m sure there will be more opportunities for him. C.J. Gardner-Johnson made a huge play on 4th down, and his attitude and energy were missed last year. Plenty of other players deserve recognition, but these three stood out to me.
Final Thoughts
Less than 24 hours after the loss, I’m still angry. This game felt eerily similar to some of last year’s frustrating defeats, which was my biggest fear coming into this season. How will the team respond? We’ll find out soon enough as they head to New Orleans to play the Saints. I always seem to be drawn back in by the belief that the team will bounce back — this week, it was A.J. Brown’s tweet that gave me hope. Brown is one of the best in the league and the heart and soul of this team. I don’t think Brandon Graham would’ve returned if he thought this team was going to crumble. Even if they lose again on Sunday, I believe this Eagles team has the potential to beat anyone. Hopefully, this early loss serves as a wake-up call — nothing will come easy this year, and they’ll have to earn everything.
