Eagles Player Profile: Trevor Keegan

We’re currently in the dead period of the off-season, and the Eagles won’t be back on the field until late July. Today, we continue the player profile series to get to know some of the new faces on the Eagles. The plan is to start with the rookies and then move on to the free agents. Today, we take a look at one of the Eagles’ fifth-round picks, Trevor Keegan.

If you predicted the Eagles would take an offensive lineman on day 1 or day 2 of the draft, you would have been wrong. In fact, I’m not sure if anyone expected the Eagles to wait until day 3, in the 5th round, to pick a lineman. But that’s exactly what they did, and I believe Trevor Keegan could be a steal. He is one of the most accomplished linemen in the draft, racking up numerous awards and conference honors, which we will delve into in the next segment. But nobody is higher on this guy than my co-host Bryce Haynes. Here’s what Bryce has to say about Trevor Keegan: “Trevor adds great depth to an already solid offensive line. He’s someone who is hungry to be the best player he can be and come in and compete. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being the starting right guard at some point in the next 1-3 years.”

High School and College Career

Born in Crystal Lake, Illinois, Trevor Keegan attended Crystal Lake South High School, where he excelled on the football field. Keegan was highly recruited, earning a 4-star rating from both ESPN and 247 Sports. He was rated the best recruit in the state of Illinois. Keegan received offers from big-name schools like Penn State and Georgia, but in December of 2018, he committed to play college football at the University of Michigan.

At Michigan, Keegan started in 37 games, almost exclusively at left guard. During his time there, he allowed only 41 pressures and 3 sacks over 1,230 passing plays. Keegan is a two-time Joe Moore Award winner (an award given to the best offensive line in college football) and a three-time All-Big Ten selection. He served as the captain of the Michigan team that won the National Championship last year.

Strengths

  • Keegan is always looking for defenders to hit until the whistle blows. Fans will absolutely love this aspect of his game. He doesn’t give up and continues to fight.
  • Keegan has played football on the biggest stage possible prior to the NFL. The switch to Sundays shouldn’t be a big issue. He played in the National Championship game and has experienced some hostile environments, so he will be ready when his number is called.
  • He works well with others! He excels at executing double teams and combo blocks. He knows how to pass off rushers from one lineman to another.
  • He’s a big guy. At 6’5″ and 310 pounds, he has the mass to handle most, if not all, pass rushers with strength alone.
  • Keegan possesses a high football IQ. He can read defenses and adjust accordingly.
  • He returned for his senior season just to pursue a National Championship. He is a leader and a team-first guy, making him a valuable addition to any locker room.

Weaknesses

In all honesty, Keegan really just needs to work on his technique when it comes to pass blocking. You will catch him with his pad level way too high, giving an advantage to rushers who take the lower leverage. His hand placement isn’t the greatest, and he sometimes struggles against super athletic rushers. If he fails to improve, he will struggle at the next level against good-to-elite pass rushers.

Trevor Keegan is definitely someone to keep an eye on. Positioned well to elevate his game, he’s under the guidance of Jeff Stoutland, who will maximize his potential. If Keegan improves, he could become a solid starter down the road, possibly even seeing some reps this year. I’m excited to witness his development and see where he takes his game. The Eagles might have just found the steal of the draft.
