Eagles Player Profile: McCallan Castles

We’re currently in the dead period of the off-season, and the Eagles won’t be back on the field until late July. Today, we continue the player profile series to get to know some of the new faces on the Eagles. Today, we take a look at one of the Eagles’ undrafted free agents, McCallan Castles.

High School & College

Castles played for South Tahoe High School, where he was a 4-star recruit according to ESPN and 247 Sports. He initially committed to playing football for the California Golden Bears. After two seasons at California, Castles transferred to UC Davis, where he saw more playing time. His best year at UC Davis was in 2021, when he caught 27 passes for 387 yards and 4 touchdowns. After the 2022 season, Castles decided to play his final year at the University of Tennessee, where he caught 22 passes for 283 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Strengths

  • Super soft hands, able to make catches outside of his frame.
  • Large catch radius.
  • Great speed off the line of scrimmage.
  • A nightmare in the red zone if given the opportunity.
  • Has a full route tree.
  • Difficult to bring down in the open field, always fighting for extra yards.
  • Good athlete.

Weaknesses

  • Not strong enough to handle bigger edge rushers.
  • Struggles playing on the line of scrimmage.
  • Not very explosive.
  • Lacks sharpness out of breaks to gain separation from defenders.
  • Doesn’t finish run blocks.

Castles is someone who I think has a real shot at making the team. When you look at the options at tight end outside of Dallas Goedert, there’s not really anyone inspiring hope. Castles has the ability to be a good receiving tight end and can help with double-team blocks, but he’s not good enough as a blocker to be the main guy. His chances of making the team are pretty high to me—I’d go as far as saying 60%. If he has a good showing in training camp, then I think he will end up being a lock. I like Castles, and I hope to see him develop as a blocker so he can contribute. Bold prediction: he scores a touchdown this year.
