Eagles Player Profile: Johnny Wilson

We’re currently in the dead period of the off-season, and the Eagles won’t be back on the field until late July. Today, we continue the player profile series to get to know some of the new faces on the Eagles. The plan is to start with the rookies and then move on to the free agents. Today, we take a look at one of the Eagles’ sixth-round picks, Johnny Wilson.

I’m not exactly sure how to write this article. If you’ve listened to any of our shows, you’ll know that I love Johnny Wilson. Maybe I shouldn’t, but he’s possibly my favorite pick ever. I think the seriousness of these articles might go out the window with this one. Johnny Wilson is someone I can’t help but fall in love with. The idea of a 6’6″, 231-pound receiver gets me pumped. How can you not love this pick? I couldn’t believe it when the Eagles selected him, and all I want to say is, “Thank you, Howie.”

High School & College

Wilson grew up in Los Angeles, California, and attended Calabasas High School. He received a four-star rating and was ranked as the fifth-best wide receiver in the nation by 247sports. Initially committed to play football for Oregon, Wilson eventually flipped to Arizona State.

In 2021, Wilson transferred to Florida State after tallying 12 receptions for 154 yards and one touchdown. During his 2022 season at Florida State, Wilson emerged as a standout, leading the team in receptions with 43, receiving yards with 897, and receiving touchdowns with 5. The following year, Wilson recorded 41 catches for 617 yards and two touchdowns in 2023. Throughout his career, he earned Second Team All-ACC honors in 2022 and Third Team All-ACC recognition in 2023.

Strengths

  • Standing at 6’6″, Wilson poses a mismatch nightmare for smaller defensive backs.
  • He boasts an ELITE catch radius and excels at high-pointing the ball.
  • With a 4.5 40-yard dash time, Wilson’s long strides and length make him a deep threat.
  • He’s a physical runner who powers through weak arm tackles and gains extra yards by keeping his feet moving.
  • Wilson consistently wins jump balls and contested catches.
  • He’s effective in bullying defensive backs as a run blocker.
  • Quick for his size, Wilson is adept at creating plays as a ball carrier once he has possession.

Weaknesses

  • Nothing.. just kidding
  • Alright, let’s be real—there are areas Wilson can improve. He struggles to create separation and rarely gets easy catches.
  • His route tree is somewhat limited, and he needs to refine his breaks in routes for better efficiency.
  • Wilson sometimes resorts to pushing off due to his struggle to create separation.
  • He has a tendency to clap at the ball when catching, which occasionally results in drops.
  • There are instances where he misjudges deep throws, leading to tracking errors.

Johnny Wilson is likely the top backup outside receiver on the roster. With Devonte Parker’s retirement, Wilson’s chances of making the team skyrocketed (though he was a lock for me regardless). Joking aside, he possesses the traits to excel as an outside receiver. With time, I hope he can refine his route running and expand his route tree. I believe he has the potential to become a starter in this league down the road.
