Double Betrayal Sinks Judgment Day at WWE SummerSlam
The Judgment Day stable has dominated WWE Monday Night Raw for more than a year, but the group unraveled at SummerSlam on Saturday night in Cleveland.
In the opener, Dominick Mysterio turned against his “Mami,” Rhea Ripley, and helped Liv Morgan retain the World women’s title.
When Dom told Liv to leave him alone, causing her to dissolve in tears, it was a SWERVE~! They were together all along.
Damien Priest lost his World championship to Gunther when his Judgment Day teammate, Finn Balor, stabbed him in the back.
Priest had the match won with the South of Heaven chokeslam, but Balor placed Gunther’s foot on the ropes.
Priest saw what Balor did on the video replay and went after him. Gunther took advantage with a powerbomb and sleeper to win his first World title.
MORE CLEVELAND BLUES FOR PUNK
I did a couple of book signings downtown before the show, and CM Punk had the most T-shirts of any WWE wrestler by a wide margin.
That’s good for him, but bad things always happen to CM Punk in Cleveland. This trend continued with his loss to Drew McIntyre.
Punk had the match won twice with the Anaconda Vise and Go To Sleep. However, both times he was more concerned with retrieving the friendship bracelet dedicated to his wife, AJ Lee, and his dog, Larry.
McIntyre kicked Punk in the junk and hit him with the Claymore Kick. Special referee Seth Rollins counted to three.
Punk’s past misfortunes in Cleveland included:
· Losing an ECW title match to Chavo Guerrero Jr.
· Walking out of the WWE in 2014
· Losing his UFC debut to Mickey Gall
· Losing the AEW World title to Jon Moxley
The best thing that ever happened to Punk in Cleveland was when my wife and I would pick him up at the airport and drive him to Pittsburgh, where he usually won.
TRIBAL CHIEF RETURNS
Roman Reigns returned to the ring for the first time since WrestleMania XL. He helped the man who beat him on that show, Cody Rhodes, to retain the WWE title against Solo Sikoa.
Several titles changed hands at SummerSlam. Bron Breakker won the Intercontinental title from Sami Zayn in less than six minutes.
Nia Jax defeated Bayley to win the WWE women’s title. LA Knight beat Cleveland’s own Logan Paul to capture the US championship.
