Don’t Let The Score Fool You: The Steelers Offense Is On Fire

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense was on fire in their game against the NY Giants, even if the score didn’t fully reflect it. Russell Wilson looked sharp, completing 20 of 28 passes for 274 yards and a touchdown, finishing with a strong quarterback rating of 114.9. He spread the ball around effectively, hitting eight different receivers, with George Pickens and Van Jefferson each catching four passes, while Calvin Austin III and Najee Harris grabbed three apiece. Pat Freiermuth and Jaylen Warren hauled in two receptions, while Mycol Pruitt and Darnell Washington also contributed with one reception each. Pickens led the charge with 74 yards, and Austin scored the lone touchdown on a beautiful deep ball from Wilson. Wilson made a few throws that showcased exactly why he was named the starter and never moved on the depth chart, even after Justin Fields’ success during his six starts.

The single touchdown by the offense might not seem like much, but if you watched the game, you’d know the Steelers were just a few plays away from adding much more to the scoreboard. Pickens had a touchdown erased due to a holding penalty and lost another when he was forced out of bounds by a great play from Donte Banks just before he could secure both feet in the end zone—a call that left many fans scratching their heads. I don’t know about you, but I thought if a foot hit inbounds twice, it would be similar to a knee or elbow touching down. Apparently, that’s not the case. There was also a near-touchdown when Wilson and Jefferson couldn’t sync up, with Jefferson running toward a defender instead of settling in the end zone. These plays will likely start to connect more often as they build chemistry.

The running game was equally impressive. Najee Harris has truly stepped up, rushing 19 times for 119 yards and averaging 6 yards per carry—his third 100-yard game in a row! Jaylen Warren added 46 yards on 9 carries, showing he’s regaining the explosiveness we’ve come to expect. With Cordarrelle Patterson set to return soon, the Steelers are in an ideal position with a stable of capable running backs.

Even though they didn’t drop 30+ points like in their previous two games, this was arguably their best performance of the season. “If” is a big word, but if the Steelers had connected on those three missed opportunities, Steelers Nation would be celebrating an offensive output of closer to 38 points. Watching the offense move the ball with ease was extremely encouraging, and even when the Giants were still hanging around, there was never a real sense of danger. It’s exciting to see an offense that can step up when the defense is having an off day, and that’s exactly what we’re starting to witness.
