Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Wins National League MVP Award
Shohei Ohtani overcame injury and a preseason controversy to become the unanimous choice for the National League’s Most Valuable Player.
The Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter was unable to add his two-way effectiveness as a pitcher due to elbow surgery in September 2023.
Before the season, his former translator was accused of transferring $17 million out of Ohtani’s bank account.
Once the season got rolling, though, nobody could stop Ohtani and the Dodgers.
He became the first player in baseball history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases. In fact, he reached 54 homers and 59 steals.
The Dodgers went all the way to win the 2024 World Series over the New York Yankees.
Ohtani won his first National League MVP after winning twice in the American League for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023.
OTHER CONTENDERS
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor gathered 23 of the 30 second-place votes.
Lindor and the Mets started slowly, but they rallied after a players-only meeting and charged into the playoffs. Lindor hit .273 with 33 homers and 91 RBI while playing solid defense.
Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte took third place, offering similarly strong production from a middle-infield spot. He hit .292 with 36 homers and 95 RBI.
The next three vote-getters were Atlanta designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, Milwaukee catcher William Contreras, and Philadelphia first baseman Bryce Harper.
