Do the Packers need a cornerback like Patrick Peterson?
The Pittsburgh Steelers cut eight-time Pro-Bowler and legendary defensive back Patrick Peterson early Friday in an effort to save $7 million in cap space. Peterson, who will be 34 at the start of next season, is on the backend of a really special career. It is unlikely he would receive a long-term deal from any team due to his age and decline in play.
However, a team like the Packers, who do have some cornerback depth, could bring in the veteran on a one-year deal to help bring inexperienced players along. He is still searching for his first Super Bowl ring. Green Bay is ready to win a Super Bowl now. Why not take a chance on the former All-Pro? Here is why Green Bay needs to make this move:
Why Peterson Could Work in Green Bay
The only consistent cornerback that Green Bay has on the roster with a lot of experience is All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander. Soon-to-be fourth-year corner Eric Stokes is talented but has injury issues. Keisean Nixon, a proven slot corner, is a free agent. Carrington Valentine, who played important snaps last year, was still a seventh-round rookie. Corey Ballantine was predominantly a practice squad player and special teams contributor before this season. So, the Packers could use another veteran corner.
Patrick Peterson could be a fantastic leader for some of the inexperienced players like Valentine and Ballentine. Remember, Peterson is a a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. The 13-year veteran has recorded at least five pass deflections and one interception each season of his career, even in his down years. He wouldn’t need to be the star with the Packers. Just a steady role player. His football IQ and mind could be great assets to new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. A one-year deal for a versatile defensive back wouldn’t be too bad of a move for GM Brian Gutekunst.
