Division Champs: Cleveland Guardians Celebrate After Loss to St. Louis Cardinals

Magic numbers can do magical things, like allowing the losing team to celebrate after the game.

The Cleveland Guardians clinched the AL Central Division championship on Saturday when the Kansas City Royals lost their sixth straight game.

That means the Guardians didn’t have to win, and they didn’t. They put up a good fight in a 6-5 loss to St. Louis before the post-game celebration.

NO PRESSURE

Matthew Boyd (2-2) pitched four innings for Cleveland. He gave up four hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth by Cardinals right fielder Jordan Walker.

Miles Mikolas (9-11) also gave up four hits for the Cardinals, but he lasted six innings. Mikolas only gave up one run on Bo Naylor’s 13th home run.

The Cardinals seemed to put the game away with four unearned runs in the seventh inning. Masyn Winn scored on an error by Josh Naylor, and Ivan Herrera hit a three-run homer off Nick Sandlin.

NO QUIT

But did the Guardians give up after trailing 6-1 in a game they didn’t have to win to get the champagne poppin’? No!

Jose Ramirez golfed a three-run homer to score Angel Martinez and David Fry. That’s 37 homers and 112 RBI for Ramirez.

Cleveland wasn’t finished. Andres Gimenez collected his third hit of the game, a single to score Lane Thomas.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals have a closer who has racked up as many saves as the Guardians’ Emmanuel Clase. Ryan Helsley pitched the ninth for his 46th save.

Cleveland will play its final road game of the regular season today at Busch Stadium. First pitch is set for 2:15 as Cleveland’s Gavin Williams (3-10) faces Andre Pallante (7-8).
