Detroit Tigers Squeak By Cleveland Guardians 1-0

Don’t blame Brayan Rocchio for the Cleveland Guardians’ 1-0 loss to the Tigers in Detroit on Monday night.

Sure, Rocchio’s error at shortstop allowed Jake Rogers to score in the bottom of the eighth inning.

But when the Guardians only get three hits and can’t get a runner to second base, they aren’t going to beat anyone.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

Instead, Cleveland fans should focus on Gavin Williams’ outstanding start. He pitched 5 1/3 shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk.

Williams struck out five batters in his second start since returning from an elbow injury.

The key to the Guardians’ success in the postseason (if we can think that far ahead) will be reliable starting pitching. We’ll see if the Cleveland front office makes a deal for a starter before the July 30 trade deadline.

Another bright spot for the Guardians was Angel Martinez, who had two of Cleveland’s three hits. He is already becoming a mainstay in the No. 2 spot in the lineup with a .400 batting average.

SO, WHAT HAPPENED?

The pivotal play of the game took place in the bottom of the eighth. Rogers had doubled, and Wenceel Perez singled to move him to third.

Mark Canha hit a grounder to shortstop. Rocchio tried to start a double play, but the ball went right under his glove. Rogers raced home with the only run of the game.

The Guardians will try to get back on the winning track tonight in Motown. Ben Lively (8-4) will start against the Tigers’ Kenta Maeda (2-5). Game time is 6:40 p.m.
