Detroit Tigers Beat Unstoppable Cleveland Closer in 3-0 Victory
Every great pitcher’s duel has to end sometime.
Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer off Emmanuel Clase to give Detroit a 3-0 win at Progressive Field on Monday.
Clase had only surrendered five earned runs in the regular season.
Tarik Skubal, who will probably beat Clase for the Cy Young Award, pitched seven shutout innings. He was perfect into the fifth inning before Josh Naylor doubled.
Matthew Boyd was Cleveland’s hero for matching Skubal’s zeroes on the mound until the fifth, when he turned the game over to the vaunted Guardians’ bullpen. Boyd and Skubal are friends from Boyd’s eight-year stint with the Tigers.
Cleveland’s outfielders showed off some amazing defense. Jhonkensy Noel gunned down a runner at second base, and Steven Kwan made a diving catch in left field.
The scrappy Tigers will be the home team on Wednesday and Thursday. The Guardians’ mission is to win both games on the road and avoid facing Skubal in the decisive Game 5.
Alex Cobb will start for Cleveland, while the Tigers will probably unload their bullpen.
ROYALS 4, YANKEES 2
All four division series are tied at one game apiece, as the Royals used a four-run explosion in the fourth to grab a victory at Yankee Stadium.
Salvador Perez tied the game for Kansas City with a solo homer off Carlos Rodon.
The Royals tacked on RBI singles by Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson, and Maikel Garcia.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered for Yankees in the ninth, but closer Lucas Erceg finished the job.
Fans made fun of Yankees manager Aaron Boone for starting Jon Berti at first base for the first time ever in the playoffs. But Berti turned an unassisted double play!
New York will send Clarke Schmidt to the mound on Wednesday against the Royals’ Seth Lugo.
