Detroit Acquires Dennis Schroder in the Massive Blockbuster Deal

The Detroit Pistons have acquired Dennis Shroder, due to their role in the Blockbuster deal for Golden State to receive Jimmy Butler. Shroder initially was sent to Utah but has now been re-routed to Detroit to complete the 4 team deal. KJ Martin, originally reported to be heading to Detroit is now being traded to Utah.

Detroit came into the year with questions of who would run the second unit, but certainly in the light of the Jaden Ivey injury, the Pistons have had a deficiency in the playmaking role off the bench while Cade Cunningham was out of the game. Schroder is a Wily vet who has made a long career off of facilitating offenses, whether it be in a starting role or off the bench. Dennis is a crafty ball-handler that can break defenses down to score for himself as well as manufacture opportunities for others.

Schroder has already played for 2 teams this year, and Detroit will be the final one of the season. In 47 games, he is averaging 14.4 points and 5.5 assist, while shooting 41% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc. He is shooting his highest volume of 3’s of his career this season. He will likely log backup point guard minutes behind Cade Cunningham, but Bickerstaff will likely tinker with the idea of playing him alongside Cade as a combo guard option. Schroder should provide more stability to a team that has been inconsistent shooting from the outside at times.

Schroder has been very vocal in his frustration of the uncertainty of what the trade deadline brings. Schroder has been traded 5 times in his 12 year career, including twice just this year. Detroit has a cohesive and upbeat team environment that should make it easy for him to fall into formation amongst the bunch. Schroder will likely be the ideal bridge player to keep things rolling until Ivey is ready to resume action, whether that’s later this year, or next year when Schroder’s contract expires.
