Daniel Jones Benched, Giants Turn To Tommy DeVito: What Does It Mean?
The New York Giants officially made the move that everyone was expecting out of the bye week. Daniel Jones has been benched and it is the end of an era in New York.
The question was, who would replace him?
Drew Lock has been the backup all season since signing a one-year deal for $5 million this offseason. The Giants also kept Tommy DeVito on the roster, which is a bit unorthodox. Ultimately, Brian Daboll and the Giants decided to go with DeVito.
Last season, DeVito played in nine games, making six starts, and threw for 1,101 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
Let’s face it, DeVito became more of a schtick than a producer on the field. Fans will remember the game-winning drive against the Green Bay Packers but he threw for just 158 yards. That night, his best work came on the ground.
There were five games last season where DeVito had a QBR under 80. He went over 200 yards passing just one time.He became known for his nickname “Tommy Cutlets” and the look of his family and agent more than his ability to throw a football.
So, at 2-8, New York knows DeVito is not the answer long term. If it believed in him, it would not have signed Lock in free agency. If the team was winning, and a hypothetical injury happened to Jones, it is more than likely that Lock would be the replacement. But with New York suffering another abysmal season, the front office wants to keep attention on the team for the final six games.
DeVito is the right choice from a business aspect when it comes to national attention and ticket sales. On the field, not that it matters much at 2-8, he is not.
So, what does this benching of Jones mean?
It means what we already knew coming into the season. Jones is not the guy moving forward. What we don’t know, but strongly suspect, is if DeVito will be. What we know now is that we’re going to find out soon.
