Dallas Wings Eliminated From Playoff Contention, What’s Next?

2023 saw the Dallas Wings have their best season in franchise history. Dallas finished the number four seed in the WNBA standings and won a playoff series for the first time since relocating to DFW in 2016.

Flash forward a year later and the Dallas Wings will not participate in this year’s WNBA postseason.

On Sunday, the Wings 77-92 loss at the hands of the Chicago Sky officially eliminated Dallas for playoff contention.

Sitting a 9-26 on the season, Dallas now has five games remaining this season, four of which are this week.

It’s easy to look at the year and pinpoint injuries as the reason for the Wings’ struggles. Dallas was without Satou Sabally for the entire first half of the season and also missed key players such as Natasha Howard, Maddy Seigrist, and rookie Jaelyn Brown for much of the season.

Moving forward, Dallas will look towards the WNBA draft lottery where they hope to land Uconn point guard Paige Bueckers who is expected to be the number one overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft.

Bueckers’ services could be of much use for the Wings who have struggled at the point guard position for much of this season.

Majority starter Sevgi Uzun has averaged just 4.7 points and 3 assists while playing 21 minutes a night in 35 games.

Rookie Jacy Sheldon has shown some flashes on both ends of the floor and could be set to step into the starters role next season.

As for the rest of the roster, the Wings will have some work to do in the offseason as both Satou Sabally and Natasha Howard are set to hit the open market as free agents.

Bringing back Sabally will once again be priority number one for the Wings as the franchise cornerstone as averaged 18.6 points 6.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists in just 10 games this season.

Natasha Howard will be a free agent for the first time since being traded to the Wings prior to the 2023 season.

Howard has been a key piece to the Wings roster this season averaging 17.7 points and 7 rebounds.

2025 will mark year three of the Latricia Trammell era, one in which she hopes having her whole team back will once again lead to franchise history.
