Dallas Stars Blank New York Islanders in Home Opener

Dallas – It was Jake Oettinger’s night in Dallas on Saturday as the Stars blanked the New York Islanders 3-0 in their home opener.

Oettinger made 34 saves on 34 shots to secure his 11th NHL shutout and first of the 2024/2025 season.

“It’s something I don’t take for granted at all,” Oettinger said. ““You need to get a little lucky and some guys need to help you out.

“A lot of things need to go right, so I never take them for granted. You just want to get the season going the right way. Good start.”

Stars captain Jamie Benn echoed the confidence that Dallas has in Oettinger night in and night out.

“[Oettinger]’s rock-solid and we have a lot of belief in him,” Benn said. “Every night we feel like when we go on the ice we’re going to win because of him.”

Benn contributed one of the Stars’ three goals at the 10:58 mark of the second period after corralling a loose puck and burying it blocker side of Islanders goalie Semyon Varlamov.

Tyler Seguin had Dallas’ other two goals after opening the scoring at 7:59 in the first period when he ripped one home from the high slot.

Seguin also put the finishing touches on the night putting one home in the empty net at 18:57 in the 3rd period.

“The home opener, your natural reaction as a player is to try and put on a show. I thought we did a good job of playing within ourselves tonight. I don’t think we beat ourselves,” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said.

“That’s a tough team to play against. They play a really structured game, and I thought we played a smart hockey game tonight. We didn’t turn it into a track meet or run-and-gun where everyone was trying to get points and put on a show. This is what it’s about. It’s about winning games.”

Dallas will be back in action on Sunday night as they take on the Seattle Kraken on the second night of a back-to-back.

Goaltender Casey DeSmith will make his Stars debut as he will get the start in net against Seattle.

Matt Dumba will not play after leaving the game against the Islanders with a lower-body injury. Dumba will get imaging on Monday to determine the extent of his injury.
