Cubs lose three of four to the Pirates
It was a tough weekend at Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs. They lost three of four games to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The biggest thing for the Cubs right now is getting healthy. Chicago played the entire series without both Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner. Swanson has been on the injured list with a knee issue, and Hoerner has been sidelined with a hamstring. The good news is that both guys are expected back on Tuesday when the Cubs take on the Atlanta Braves.
With Swanson and Hoerner out, the Cubs were forced to play Miles Mastrobuoni at shortstop and Nick Madrigal at second base. The defense takes a big hit with those guys out there, but it is the offense that really suffers. The Cubs were able to score just 10 total runs across the four games. To be fair though, the first two games came against two of the best young pitchers in the game in Jared Jones and Paul Skenes. Those guys were lights out in the games they pitched and look to be a problem for the Cubs for years to come.
Shota Imanaga continued his great start to the season when he pitched seven scoreless innings in the Cub’s lone win of the series on Sunday. He struck out seven and lowered his ERA on the season to 0.84. Imanaga is should currently be the favorite to win both National League Rookie of the Year and the NL Cy Young.
The Cubs look to get back on track when the Braves come to Wrigley Field after Chicago had an off day on Monday. Tuesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM Central time with Javier Assad scheduled to take on Charlie Morton.
