Jerry Jones Hesitant on Cowboys Coaching Decision
I wrote an article on Fans First Sports Network back in November after the Cowboys were 3-6, hope was lost, and it appeared Mike McCarthy wasn’t returning to the team. We looked at six candidates who could be a good fit in Dallas next season. Since then, the Cowboys finished 7-10 and showed signs of life despite all the injuries.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys organization are taking their time and not rushing to decide Mike McCarthy’s future and if he will coach the team in 2025. McCarthy is currently not under contract and can interview with other teams, and the Cowboys have permission to interview any coaching candidate since McCarthy’s contract has expired.
Jerry, learn from your mistakes and make a decision.
Last spring, Jerry Jones sat on his hands and decided to let the rest of the NFL participate in free agency. Jerry Jones decided to wait on the contract extensions of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb until September, keeping the team from cap space to improve the other holes in the roster. While taking that approach, we saw the price-tags for Prescott and Lamb only rise and the team was exposed for moves not made in the offseason, while teams like Philadelphia and Baltimore thrived with signing Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry, respectively.
In hindsight, patience didn’t help the Cowboys, regressing from a 12-5 record to a 7-10 season. Fans can only play the “what if” game with last offseason. If the team re-signs Prescott sooner and opens up the cap space needed for free agents, who wears the star? Could that have been the difference in playing meaningful football in January?
Here we are on Black Monday now, notorious for teams moving on from head coaches. The direction for teams become clearer, particularly those who miss the playoffs. Already, the Jaguars have fired Doug Pederson and the Giants have decided to keep Brian Daboll. Two poverty organizations have chosen the direction they want to go in 2025, but the Cowboys remain at a standstill.
Jerry Jones was adamant in an interview after Sunday’s 23-19 loss to the Washington Commanders in the regular season finale that he would not hire a General Manager to help make decisions. Jerry said he purchased an occupation when he decided to buy the Dallas Cowboys many moons ago. And to be fair, that is his right. If he purchased the Cowboys organization, he can do whatever he wants. However, if you are going to be the General Manager, you must act like a General Manager.
Jerry knew this day was coming. If we were writing an article about McCarthy’s replacement mid-November, Jerry should have it on his radar this decision was looming. You wonder why Jerry’s mind isn’t set on retaining Mike McCarthy or if he has his eye on another coaching candidate? Either way, keep your guy or go get your guy, before you’re left without options.
This could be another example of Jerry Jones and his hesitation or lack of decision-making hurting the on-field production of the Dallas Cowboys.
Cowboys Nation implores you, Jerry Jones. Go get your guy… before there are no guys left.
