BREAKING NEWS: Mike McCarthy Leaving Dallas Cowboys
Breaking News in to start your Monday! Eight days after the Cowboys season concluded at 7-10, Mike McCarthy will not return as the Dallas Cowboys head coach, first reported by CBS and confirmed by Tom Pelissero.
Mike McCarthy went 49-35 as the Cowboys head coach with three consecutive 12-win seasons between 2021-2023, the only time that has been done in NFL history. A 1-3 playoff record and regression this year is how his tenure with the Cowboys end.
According to Pelissero, there was a breakdown in negotiations regarding the length of a new contract. McCarthy’s deal was set to expire at midnight tonight.
The Chicago Bears requested to interview the former Packers head coach, who won a Super Bowl with the Packers back in 2010, ironically in the home stadium of the Dallas Cowboys. Chicago will likely get the opportunity to interview McCarthy now this week after they were denied by Dallas last week.
Throughout McCarthy’s entire career, he is 174-112 at a 61% winning percentage with a .500 playoff record (11-11).
We talked about the urgency of Jerry Jones deciding on a head coach, and after Mike Vrabel agreed with the New England Patriots yesterday, there is one candidate off the list.
We’ll see who Dallas pursues to be the franchise’s next head coach. They will inherit the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL in Dak Prescott, and the second-highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL with CeeDee Lamb. The next coach will also have to convince the franchise to re-sign Micah Parsons and use the 12th overall pick this year to help the team get to winning ways in the playoffs.
We will keep updating you at Fans First Sports Network on the latest with the Cowboys and Mike McCarthy. Until then, look at this article we wrote earlier this season about six candidates the Cowboys could replace McCarthy with.
