The Big Moments: Washington State

So, a new series I will be posting off and on will break down the biggest games of the year from a 10,000 look. I’ll explain why the game matters more than others, some of the critical pieces you need to know, and why Tech can get the job done.

Why it matters more: This is an easy one to explain, as the answer is pretty simple. Sandwiched between a date with Abeline Christian and North Texas, a road trip to Wazzou possess the most real threat of the nonconference portion of the year. Yes, crazy things happen but I cannot even entertain a world where Tech drops either of the other games. That is just too pathetic of an outcome to seriously worry about for now. Washington State on the road, even picked for parts and unstable, will be a real challenge. The fans could rally to their program and turn that environment into hell on earth, and Tech under McGuire has just been bad on the road a lot of the time.

Things to Know: Washington state lost star quarterback Cameron Ward and both their top two targets in the receiver core. Both top backs are gone as well, and one of the worst offensive lines in the nation is now more experienced but unproven if they can take a step forward. An offense that was streaky and at times flat looks like a major project to get off the ground. Defensively the Cougars have a strong linebacker group, but the secondary and Dline are total rebuilds. There are good options with PT to fill in, but losing both starting corners and the two best starters on a mediocre DL means this team is not in great shape.

Why Tech can get the Job Done: Frankly, Tech is just a better team that Wazzou. A team not known for pass rush likely won’t be able to consistently pressure Morton, and with the wombo-combo of Tahj Brooks coming at them too this feels like a game to put on a show. If Tech can overcome their usual road woes, and play clean football, they will cruise in this game. Washington State just does not have the horses, and with the Apple Cup the next week everything is working against the home team.

Tech should win this 42-28.
