Texas Tech heads into Laramie to take on Wyoming in a Week 1 showdown

Well, it’s that time of year once again. The time of year where I get to sit down, try not to sound like a homer and preview games weekly with you all. I’ve missed it oh so much. With week 1 on tap, Texas Tech is traveling to Wyoming to take on a talented Mountain West squad in what should be a great tune up for next weeks big time showdown with the Oregon Ducks.

Wyoming had a solid season last year with a 7-6, 5-3 in the Mountain West. They played multiple good football teams extremely close, including the likes of Big 12 conference mate BYU, San Jose State, and ended their season with a close loss to a good Ohio squad.

The Cowboys are led by senior QB Andrew Peasley, who’s going into his second year at Wyoming after four seasons at Utah State. Peasley was relatively average through the air, completing 144 passes on 275 attempts, turning that into 1,575 yards. He tossed 10 TDs but also had 9 INTs. Peasley had an up and down season through the air, but had a pretty good season running the ball. He ran the ball 81 times for 339 yards, that includes 3 games with 70+ rushing yards. He’s a very good dual threat option for the Cowboys.

One spot that I’m really interested in is starting running back Jamari Ferrell for the Cowboys. Wyoming has always been a fantastic running team and they aren’t looking to change their identity. Now comes in a relatively unknown running back from Saddleback Community College in California. To get a shot at this level, you have to be talented. I think it’s gonna be very intriguing to see what Ferrell can do in his first D1 game against a very quality Big 12 defense.

Defensively, Wyoming was a really good group last season. Allowing only 24 ppg, their defense was able to keep them alive in quite a few close games. The Cowboys don’t necessarily cause a lot of turnovers, getting only 6 interceptions last year. They seem to have a really good bend don’t break mentality.

Overall, Texas Tech should win this game relatively easy, but like I said earlier, this should be a fantastic tune up game for next week. I’m really looking forward to what this Red Raider squad is going to look like, and this is going to be a fantastic preview in Laramie.
