Texas Tech crushes North Texas, regains momentum
The Red Raiders entered last Saturday’s win without an identity, confidence, or any momentum. Against a North Texas team with plenty of those things, Texas Tech was desperate to prove this season is not already lost.
And prove it they did, dominating the Eagles 66-21 in a game that was not even that close. A confident offensive unit, now supported by returning star Tahj Brooks, marched the field with ease. A defensive unit looking to make a name for themselves took care of business.
After a long North Texas touchdown made this game nervy for a minute in the first quarter at a score of 17-7, Texas Tech would intercept Chandler Morris three times (including a pick-six) that ended the game. Granted, two of the picks were just tip-drills and were more about UNT imploding but still. Players made the plays and Tech rattled off 35 unanswered in the second quarter to get the starters on the benches at halftime and tie the program record for most points scored in one half.
In the second half Brown would take over from Morton, who looked much better than that disaster in Pullman, and had a pretty mediocre showing. Will Hammond, the highly-anticipated freshman many believe to be the program’s future, would go 5/7 and 70 yards in mop-up duty. Micah Hudson would see expanded minutes after half, recording 3 catches for 43 yards.
All in all, beating North Texas was not a big deal. Crushing North Texas? Now that might just have sparked a resurgence for this season.
