Texas Tech blows off own foot repeatedly against the Cougars

I have seen Tech get blown out. I have seen Tech lose close. I have seen Tech just play against better teams and never have a shot. But the last two seasons under Joey McGuire the most common loss seems to be Tech self destructing.

The Red Raiders started their disaster of a night in Pullman with a fumble on the opening kick. But no worries, as they would force an interception. But then Texas Tech goes three and out, shanks the punt, and surrenders a short-field touchdown.

That was a microcosm of the night. Pisspoor offensive football, a defense that was constantly pushed against the wall with short fields, and undisciplined poorly coached ball.

This reaction could break down the stats in detail. Behren Morton’s 3/11 on throws beyond 15 yards, or the 1-5 on fourth down attempts stand out. But really, that sequence sums it all up. Against a bad, and I mean very bad, Washington State team Texas Tech spent the night beating itself. Penalties mounted, bad throws galore, poorly called offensive sequences, and no Tahj Brooks available to save the day doomed this effort from the start.

The Red Raiders lack any identity on offense, and defensively they still look unprepared for what an opposing team is trying to do. Playing a glorified running back, Tech regularly lacked lane discipline, pursuit angles, or more damning a spy to contain a guy who could not throw.

This was bad. Enough Said.
