Devil’s Advocate: Is McGuire on the hotseat?

The inflammatory title aside, the purpose of this article is to start a discussion. Nothing more, nothing less. I will present a simple set of facts and make both sides of the argument. You, dear readers, will decide for yourselves which side makes the most sense.

First, the affirmative argument.

Affirmative: Of course he is. Have we not all seen the new mode of operation for programs? He has had two full years, and multiple recruiting classes, and he is heading into a new year. Not only was year three considered make or break before the NIL/portal era, but after it absolutely is. How can it not be? You can recruit immediate need positions to address holes. Not only that, the staff is stable and experienced. McGuire overachieved in year one winning 8 games, but is 8 games the standard of a good year? And what about the embarrassment last year only salvaged beating up on an overrated Cal team? How can we not hold this guy to the idea he needs to put up or shut up? Enough hype, the team is there and the schedule is weak. Get to work.

Negative: Do I need to remind everybody how much of a mediocre mess Tech has been since Leach left? Tech has never truly reached the heights of the sport, and Wells did his best to ensure they had no talent in the cupboard to ever get there. Year One changed the energy of the program, and yes Year Two was frustrating but did you miss the injuries to the QBs and critical positions? You were a couple plays away from hanging on against Wyoming and ruining Oregon’s season. Year One you got those breaks, Year Two you didn’t. But whatever happens in Year Three, the recruiting is continuing to build. And with the Big 12 continuing to evolve, there is time to complete the rebuild even if this year is not a homerun. Panic ejecting McGuire is an overreaction that will set the program even further back at a time it cannot afford ot be.
