Devil’s Advocate: Is Kittley Coaching for his Job?

The inflammatory title aside, the purpose of this article is to start a discussion. Nothing more, nothing less. I will present a simple set of facts and make both sides of the argument. You, dear readers, will decide for yourselves which side makes the most sense.

First, the affirmative argument.

Affirmative: HELL YES. The piss-poor game management in critical situations last year cost Texas Tech three wins. Three. Wins. The losses to Oregon and West Virginia sucked hard, but the loss to Wyoming was just a huge black-eye. Not only that, but how predictable has this offense been? How little are tight ends being used? There are so many flaws in the system and playcalling that frankly it is only because McGuire doesn’t want to panic so early that Kittley still has a job. Zach Kittley has one last year to get the job done, no excuses can save him if the offense sputters once again.

Negative: I won’t pretend there have not been some rough playcalls, but losing multiple QBs in back-to-back years and having a struggling offensive line pretty much nuked this offense’s chances of success the last two season. The healthy moments have largely been pretty good, and while fans may not love every screen called the reality is they are a successful play that works and spreads a defense out. Not only that, there have been plenty of games won by the adjustments Kittley has made. UH in year one, the game with OU both immediately come to mind. Kittley doesn’t deserve the hate he gets, especially considering the awful injury luck. No way should fans being pushing for his dismisal without a chance to even see what he can really do.
