Countdown to Kickoff Day 4: 4 Keys

We are creeping ever closer to Texas Tech kicking off the season against the Abeline Christian Wildcats. While that game, we pray, won’t be too eventful for Tech the rest of the year is tough to predict. The schedule is weak, but Texas Tech has never historically taken full advantage of its potential. To do so this year, I came up with four keys to the season.

RUN. THE. DAMN. BALL

Tahj Brooks is the best back in college football, and I will die on that hill. No one did more with less last season, and with a hopefully a revamped offensive line and receiving corp to support a resurging passing attack, this could be a truly special year. If Kittley feeds him the damn rock. The unwillingness to do so cost Texas Tech 3 wins last season, this year it is critical that Tech makes thing easy for themselves and lets Brooks eat.

Stay Healthy

Nothing that any one person can to do, this is more a plea to the universe. Please, please, please, let the QBs stay healthy. And your star defensive players. Texas Tech played Texas with a shell of a team, and the injuries played the biggest role in quite a few games (hello BYU). Texas Tech needs some luck, luck that has eluded it for years since the wrongful termination Mike Leach. If there was ever a season, this weak schedule is the perfect time.

Stay Focused

Texas Tech has had a bad habit of not showing up in a few games, or generally losing focus in the middle of the games. Last year, Wyoming and Texas stand out as part of that trend largest. Finishing games is something McGuire hopefully has now effectively drilled into this program. As well as drilling into them putting their pants on and getting to work each game so that there are no embarrassing showings. Maybe this team won’t be as good as we all hope, but if they perform their best every game I am prepared to let the chips fall where they may.

WIN

Nothing else to it. Time to get the job done.
