Countdown To Kickoff Day 32: Load Managing Tahj Brooks
Tahj Brooks had numerous games over 30 carries, so I thought on day 32 to chat about how to manage Brooks’ workload. The issue is Brooks is an extremely effective back, and using him in bunches will be a large part of the formula for Tech’s offensive success this year. But, he is also an older back who has a future in the NFL ahead of him to worry about. While Brooks is not thinking about his future, just getting one more yard for his team, the staff has an obligation to worry about it.
Plus, an injury due to overuse would devastate this team.
So what to do? There is not a simple answer to the question, as Brooks needs at least 20 carries per game for Tech to win. And in some games he may need 30. What number is the right number will vary game-to-game, but this topic is going to be one that is looked at all season. Last year, Tech lost games not giving Brooks enough touches. But it also felt like there were games they refused to do anything but hand-off to Brooks including in situations it wasn’t called for.
I don’t envy the staffs responsibility this year in protecting their superstar, but the hope of a resurgent passing attack will hopefully make this process a lot easier to manage.
