Cobb Cruises as Cleveland Crushes Chicago Cubs
The Cleveland Guardians had some offensive highlights in last night’s 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs, but it was all about the pitching.
Alex Cobb won his first game in a Cleveland uniform since arriving in a deadline trade with the San Francisco Giants.
Cobb pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up just three hits and a run. This happened one day after another new starter, Michael Boyd, shut down the Cubs.
If Cobb and Boyd can pitch like this, the Guardians rotation will be in great shape for the postseason.
FINISH THE STORY
The Guardians completed a three-game sweep of the Cubs and recorded their fifth straight victory. With the Minnesota Twins losing, Cleveland has a 4½-game lead over the Twins in the AL Central Division.
The Cubs scored first when Clay Bellinger hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to score Seiya Suzuki.
Josh Naylor countered with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. He scored the go-ahead run on a single by Andres Gimenez.
Cleveland increased the lead to 4-1 in the fifth when Will Brennan tripled to score Steven Kwan.
Jose Ramirez grounded out to score Brennan and pick up his 98th RBI. Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads the league with 110.
In the eighth, Gimenez padded the Guardians’ lead with a triple to score Ramirez and Lane Thomas.
The Guardians will enjoy a day off before heading to Milwaukee for a three-game series with the Brewers. Gavin Williams (2-4) will start on Friday against former Cleveland pitcher Aaron Civale (3-8).
