Cleveland Guardians Win Road Series From Best Team in Baseball

The Cleveland Guardians passed their biggest test of the season by defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 on Sunday.

The Phillies have the best record in baseball, and the Guardians took two out of three at Citizens Bank Park.

The game didn’t start well for the Guardians, as Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber welcomed Joey Cantillo to the major leagues with a leadoff home run.

When Schwarber came back up to the plate in the third inning, he did it again. This time, it was a two-run shot, and Philly was on top 3-0.

The Phillies picked the perfect game to give away “Schwarbomb” beach towels to their fans. Schwarber has 22 home runs this season.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

It looked like another game in which the Guardians’ offense can’t get started. But then Jhonkensy Noel changed the story with one swing of the bat.

Noel clobbered a three-run homer to center field to tie the game in the fourth inning.

It was a battle of the bullpens for the rest of the game, and that’s a strong point for the Guardians.

Cade Smith, Nick Sandlin, Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, Scott Barlow, and Emmanuel Clase shut out the formidable Phillies lineup on one hit over the final 5 2/3 innings.

Herrin improved his record to 4-0, and Clase earned his 33rd save.

KWAN FOR THE ROAD

All Cleveland needed was one more run to secure the victory. In the seventh inning, Steven Kwan delivered a solo homer to right field off Jose Alvarado.

The Guardians will try to carry that momentum into a two-game series in Detroit, which starts tonight at 6:40 p.m.

Tanner Bibee will start for the Guardians. Detroit is scheduled to start Jack Flaherty, who has dominated Cleveland twice recently. Guardians fans are hoping Flaherty gets traded before the game, as the trading deadline is Tuesday at 6 p.m.
