Cleveland Guardians Wallop Detroit Tigers 7-0 in Playoff Opener
Stephen Vogt laid his cards on the table in the Cleveland’s 7-0 win over Detroit to open the playoffs.
The Guardians manager unleashed an offense that had been waiting for nearly a week to hit something. Cleveland scored five runs before making an out.
Then, with the game well in hand, Vogt showed off all four of his bullpen arms in an attempt to demoralize the opposition.
FAST LANE TO VICTORY
Steven Kwan scored Cleveland’s first run on a ground ball by Jose Ramirez. Thanks to an error by Tigers third baseman Zack McKinstry, David Fry was safe at third.
Josh Naylor knocked in Fry with a single before Lane Thomas launched a three-run homer into the left-field bleachers.
Armed with a five-run lead, Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee kept the Tigers off the scoreboard for 4 2/3 innings.
Cade Smith then struck out all four hitters he faced. Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, and Emmanuel Clase mowed down the Tigers to close the game.
Overall, Cleveland pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts.
Fry doubled in the sixth inning to bring home Kwan and Jhonkensy Noel, increasing Cleveland’s lead to 7-0.
The Guardians will take on Cy Young Award favorite Tarik Skubal (18-4, 2.39 ERA, 228 strikeouts) on Monday at 4:08 p.m. Matthew Boyd, who pitched for Detroit for eight years, will start for Cleveland.
