Cleveland Guardians Tame Resilient Detroit Tigers 9-8

Jumping out to a 6-0 lead is no guarantee of an easy victory.

But that’s why they play nine innings.

The Cleveland Guardians put away the Detroit Tigers 9-8 in 10 innings, evening up the series at one game apiece.

THIS WILL BE EASY … RIGHT?

Angel Martinez continued his hot start with a solo home run in the first. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt is playing the youngster all over the field to keep his bat in the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

Josh Naylor then hit his 22nd homer of the year to score Jose Ramirez.

Cleveland scored three more in the third inning on an RBI single by Ramirez and a two-run double by Andres Gimenez.

Unfortunately for Cleveland, Ben Lively was unable to hold a six-run lead. Colt Keith hit a two-run homer in the third, and Wenceel Perez drove in another run in the fourth on a groundout.

Josh Naylor extended Cleveland’s lead to 7-3 with a bases loaded groundout in the sixth.

REMEMBER ME?

Third baseman Gio Urshela played for the Indians back in 2015 and 2017. He reintroduced himself to Cleveland fans with a three-run homer in the sixth.

Teammate Justyn-Henry Malloy also homered in the sixth to tie the game 7-7.

That score held up until the 10th inning. The Guardians loaded the bases, and Josh Naylor singled to score his brother, Bo.

Brayan Rocchio added a sacrifice fly to score Steven Kwan and make the score 9-7.

Detroit still managed to score one more time in the 10th on a sacrifice fly by catcher Carson Kelly before Cleveland finally nailed down the victory.

Scott Barlow (3-3) earned the victory for the Guardians, while All-Star Emmanuel Clase collected his 28th save.

DODGE THE RAINDROPS

If the Guardians and Tigers play today, Tanner Bibee (7-3, 3.67 ERA) will start against Detroit’s Reese Olson (3-8, 3.22 ERA). The game is supposed to start at 6:40 p.m.

Cleveland radio announcer Tom Hamilton predicted a rainout, but then, some fans said this wild game would be rained out, so you never know!
